what is it about working with my dissertation data that makes me feel the undeniable urge to have a drink in the middle of the day?
flash backs to diss writing?
thinking about prison??
feeling like I’m in a [writing/revision] prison of my own creation.
Yes, yes, and yes.
ps. it’s 2:51…but it’s 5:00 somewhere, right?
pps. it’s like 85 degrees out…that makes beer drinking in the middle of the day okay, right?
ppps. yes, I am trying to justify having a beer so early in the day. Is it working? 🙂
pppps. on a related note, how many jobs do you know of that allow you to drink “on the job” ~ I love my work 🙂

I just love attending conferences. I am pretty sure that this makes me a nerd…. but whatever. I’m pretty much a self-proclaimed nerd anyway!
Last weekend I was able to attend the Organizational Communication Mini Conference (OCMC). It was a blast to see so many old friends & meet several new ones. Conferences always inspire me to do better…to do more.
Here’s a pic taken with all of the former (and current) Longhorns 🙂 I really miss these folks!
It’s so awesome to have a profession where you can move on to a totally different state and still count on seeing your friends at least once or twice a year. Worth every drop of blood, sweat, and tears I had to endure to get here!
Note. The drive to GET to NJ was not so fun… 9 hours in the car with 10 other folks. We did pretty darn well, but that much time with anyone (other than my sweetie pie) is tough! Glad to have gone & enjoyed, but also glad to be H.O.M.E.
Pre dissertation completion….
Note the piles of articles on the floor. CLUTTER central. This is the way our apartment looked for weeks… Poor Steve!
…and our kitchen table didn’t look much better!!!
Getting my “sunshine & fresh air fix” for the day!
This shot was taken on the day of my defense~ whew! Huge sigh of relief!!
And Steve enjoying crossing the finish line as well! I just love the expression on his face!
Thought y’all would get a kick out of these shots!
……All I want to do is take pictures & make memories……..
Deep SIGH of Relief. I passed my defense on Thursday~ there is officially a light at the end of the tunnel.
This afternoon I took the opportunity to relax & enjoy Austin! I walked around the UT campus for several hours taking pictures 🙂 Here are just a few ~
This is the brick wall that’s outside of my office building
Littlefield Patio, where many a meal was eaten & many a cup of coffee purchased!
Gearing~ I taught here my very first semester at UT!
A view of the tower from the back. I NEVER noticed the Greek letters that run up the building. Pretty cool up close!
Decoration on one of the buildings near the tower
Flowers near the business school
No tour of campus would be complete with out a picture of a Bevo Statue! 🙂
I’m really looking forward to putting together a scrapbook of my years at UT some time this summer. I’m SO ready to have time to be “crafty” again!
When stress comes remember..
Psalm 68: 19-20
PRAISE be to the Lord, to God our Savior who DAILY bears our BURDENS.
Our God is a God who SAVES; From the Sovereign Lord comes ESCAPE from DEATH.
Now I don’t know about you~ but that sure lifts my spirit.
Trying to go to bed feeling serene…..

I am not sure how I feel right now… probably b/c there are so many emotions swimming around in my head. So many fearful thoughts.
- Fear: that I won’t finish the dissertation in time
- Stress: for the amount of work I have to complete in the next few months
- Exhaustion: from lack of sleep
- Physical highs & lows from too much coffee & too little exercise
- Worry: about EVERY THING… but most specifically, that I won’t meet the expectations that others have for my dissertation work
- Self-doubt: I often feel like I don’t even know what the heck I’m doing.
- Lastly, I’m all hopped up on frosting from these yummy brownies that I took time out to make. I think I ate WAY too much batter & frosting before combining the two together. Sugar headache = yuck.
That’s probably enough emotion for y’all for one night! So here’s a brownie recipe since you hung with me through all of that. I ALWAYS get complements on these. 🙂 Crazy huh? The recipe right off the back of the Nestle Cocoa box just happens to have the yummiest brownie recipe… go figure 🙂
You all know what a brownie looks like, so sorry… no pics this time!
Nestle Chewy Cocoa Brownies
• 1 & 2/3 c. sugar
• ¾ c. (or 1 & ½ sticks) butter melted
• 2 Tbsp water
• 2 large eggs
• 2 tsp vanilla extract
• 1 & 1/3 c. all purpose flour
• ¾ c. nestle tollhouse baking cocoa
• ½ tsp baking powder
• ¼ tsp salt
Preheat the oven to 350. Grease a 9×13 pan.
Combine sugar, butter, and water in a large bowl. Stir in eggs and vanilla. Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder & salt in a medium bowl. Stir into sugar mixture. Spread into baking pan.
Bake for 18-25 min or until wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out slightly sticky. Cool (and frost if desired).
Makes 2 doz brownies.
Make some homemade frosting out of cocoa powder, powdered sugar, butter, vanilla, and milk. Sorry I don’t have the measurements~ I just play this by ear…. FROSTING! YUMMMO
back to work…. bleh…..bleh…. bleh
I have some good friends in my program @ UT that put together a very fun (and funny!) “mini series” on being in the academy & life as a graduate student. According to their blog: “Yakademics is a video series about the adventures of two doctoral students in the field of communication, Andrew Ishak and Andy Tollison. Each episode is centered around an interview with a scholar in our field.”
They “coerced” me and my good friend Lacy to be in one of their episodes. Okay… well, they didn’t really have to bend our arms too much 🙂 It was a really fun time!
Hope you enjoy!!! …. you’ll see us at about the 2:00min mark 🙂
You can go here to see all the episodes.
Here’s the video!
